Terms of Use

By creating an account you agree to these terms. They are written to be read rather than skipped, and the first section is the one that matters.

RunTracker is not a rescue service

We do not contact emergency services. Nobody is monitoring your run. When you raise an alarm, or your phone goes quiet, or you are overdue, we send an email to the contacts you nominated. That is all that happens.

If you or someone else is in danger, call your local emergency number yourself. Do not wait for us, and do not assume anyone has been sent.

It will sometimes fail

RunTracker depends on things outside our control, and any of them can stop it working exactly when you need it:

Your phone's battery, and Android's power management, which can kill background recording without telling you.
GPS accuracy, which is poor between tall buildings, under dense canopy, in tunnels and in bad weather.
Mobile signal, which is why the app is built to work without it — but an alarm still cannot leave your phone until something can carry it.
Our server, your email provider, and the recipient's spam filter.

Treat it as one layer of preparation, never the only one. Tell somebody where you are going and when you will be back, by whatever means you would have used before this app existed. Carry what you would have carried anyway.

Your account

You are responsible for keeping your password to yourself.
Give us an email address you can actually receive, because it is how you confirm the account and recover it.
Only add contacts who would expect to hear from you if something went wrong.
A tracking link is a secret URL. Anyone you send it to can pass it on, and anyone holding it can see where you are. Revoke it if it travels further than you intended.

Paying

Everything in the app is free and will stay free: recording runs, alarms, your run history, GPX export, and being watched for going quiet or being overdue.

A subscription costs R240 per year, billed through PayFast, and buys one thing — the live tracking link. New accounts get 14 days of it, starting at your first run. It renews annually until you cancel, which you can do at any time; access continues to the end of the period you have paid for. We do not offer refunds for a period already started.

If a subscription lapses while you are out on a run, any tracking link you have already sent keeps working. Cutting watchers off from somebody still out there is not something we will do over billing.

Your data stays yours

Your runs belong to you. You can delete any of them, or your whole account, at any time — see the Privacy Policy.

Liability

RunTracker is provided as is, without warranty of any kind. To the fullest extent the law allows, we are not liable for injury, loss or damage arising from using it or from relying on it — including a failure to record, a notification that did not arrive or arrived late, or an inaccurate position.

Nothing here limits liability that cannot be limited by law, including for death or personal injury caused by negligence, or for fraud.

Ending it

You can stop using RunTracker and delete your account whenever you like. We may suspend an account that abuses the service or endangers others, and we will say why.

Law

These terms are governed by the law of South Africa.
